Milender White (MW) delivered a major research aviation facility for the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. MW demolished an existing building and constructed a state-of-the-art, two-story 42,931 sq. ft. Type II-B building in its place, while also making minor renovations to two connected airplane hangars.
This new building is called the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). UCAR uses this building as a “nerve center” for its wildfire and climate research conducted by specially modified C-130 aircraft. The new facility includes offices, labs, chemical storage rooms, a warehouse, a loading dock, conference and reception areas and employee amenities. Site development included surface parking, a courtyard and miscellaneous improvements and repairs.
MW worked in collaboration with UCAR, which manages the facility, and the National Science Foundation, TreanorHL, Iconergy, and Wember Inc. Our project leaders met the challenge of constructing with minimal impact on airfield operations, which required flawless scheduling, logistics planning and safety considerations. Researchers across the U.S. are heading to the new facility for major field projects.
